Week 6: Quilt Top Assembly

Welcome back to our final week of the Granny Core QAL! We have had such a wonderful time seeing everyone’s color choices and blocks come to life! If you are making a baby/wall hanging sized quilt, congratulations, your top is done! If you’re making a throw or larger follow along for the finishing touches. 

Make sure you’re squared up! 

Before jumping into our top assembly make sure you have squared up each block to its final size - 23 1/2” x 31"

Piece Your Rows

Arrange your blocks in rows, matching checkerboard seams and top background seams.

Pin carefully to ensure your seams align well (especially along the checkerboards as this will be the most noticeable if things are askew) and then stitch your rows together.

Press the seam allowances to the side to reduce bulk and create a stronger seam.

Assemble Your Rows

Once all your rows are pieced, begin joining the rows to each other.

Use the same pinning method, matching key points such as block intersection seams.

To ensure everything is distributed evenly, use the center-point method:

- Fold your row or blocks in half and lightly crease or mark the center.

- Do the same with the row you are attaching it to.

- Pin at the center points first, then pin outwards from there. This helps prevent shifting and ensures an even finish.

Press seam allowances to the side as you go.

Taking the time to mark those center points can make a big difference in achieving a neat, symmetrical quilt top.

Final Pressing

Once your quilt top is assembled, give it a final press to smooth out any wrinkles and set the seams.
